CEETIA founded on 12 June, 1989 by MOET No. 668/QD. License for Scientific-Technological operation No. 038, dated 25 March, 1993 granted by MOSTE.
REMS founded on 22 October, 1994 by MOSTE No. 1211-QD/MTg, was given the task of Environmental Monitoring for urban and industrial areas in the North part of Vietnam from Hue city to the Vietnam-China boundary.
Scope of Scientific-Technological activities:
- Pollution control on air, noise and water environment, solid waste disposal;
- Environmental impact assessment (EIA);
- Air conditioning and ventilation;
- Water supply and drainage, water and wastewater treatment for urban, rural and industrial areas;
- Environmental monitoring.
Scientific research and application of progressive technologies:
- Survey, investigation and evaluation on state of environmental pollution for towns and industrial areas;
- Environmental monitoring and pollution control for provinces and cities;
- Design, installation and improvement of facilities for ventilation, air conditioning, air pollution treatment, water supply and drainage, lighting and sound systems, solid waste disposal, noise and vibration prevention , etc.
- Environmental impact assessment for development projects and industrial sites;
Education and Training
The CEETIA and Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE), in co-operation with the other institutions and universities, carry out the graduate training Engineers, Masters, Ph.D. of environmental engineering as well as training courses for environmental monitors. The teaching staff includes 40 persons, among which 4 Professors, 3 Ass. Professors, 2 Dr.Sc., 10 Ph.D., 8 Masters, 20 Engineers and Technicians of Environmental engineering.
- Each year about 200 students of Environmental engineering faculty carry out the experiment and practice in the CEETIA;
- 40 Masters, 10 Ph.D. of Environmental engineering have graduated from CEETIA (1990 - 2000);
- 25 training courses on Environmental monitoring have been organized for the DOSTEs of provinces and cities (1995 - 2000).
Highlight scientific research (1986 - 2002):
* Scientific research projects:
- Evaluation of existing environmental pollution situation and proposal measures for mitigation of environmental pollution in Hanoi, Haiphong, Viettri, Namdinh, Haihung, Quangngai, etc. (1991-1995);
- Studying and prediction of environmental pollution caused by urban and industrial development, setting up the projects of environmental protection (1986 - 2002);
- Annual report: Vietnam State of Environment (SOE) (1996 - 2002);
- Surveying and evaluating environmental pollution situation caused by industry in Hanoi city (1996 - 1997);
- Proposal of combined measures and establishment of pilot project to prevent Environment in Hanoi from pollution (1996 - 2000);
- Action plan of environmental protection for Ninhbinh province. (1997);
- Proposal the measures of Environmental protection in Haiduong (1997);
- Setting up the National environmental protection policy for the period of 2000 - 2020 (1997 - 1998).
- Small-scale wastewater treatment system (1997 – 1998).
- Polystyrel filter for ferrous removal at water treatment systems (1996 – 1998);
- Septage and solid waste collection and disposal for urban areas (1998).
- Advanced septic tanks for domestic wastewater treatment (1997 – 2001).
- Decentralized wastewater treatment systems in Vietnam (1999 – 2002).
- Wastewater management for handicraft villages in rural areas (2002).
- Fecal sludge co-composting with urban organic waste (2000 - 2002).
- Arsenic removal technologies from ground water (2001 - 2002).

- EIA Guidelines for cement plant, sea port, railways projects, urban and industrial development projects, regional socio-economic development projects, etc. (1996 – 1999);
- EIA reports for Chingphong, Hoangthach, Butson, Luksvaxi Cement plants, Vietnam float glass, Haiduong EBARAPump, Yamaha Motor, Nhatrang Huyndai-Vinaship Shipyard, Baibang Paper pulp mill, Nomura power plant (NHIZ); Hanoi Water supply project 1a; Noibai International airport; Highways N.1, N.18, Ring roads system in Hanoi city; Cuaong, Chanmay Sea Ports; Caudien solid waste composting plant, Taymo Landfill; etc.

- Air conditioning system, cooling tower, water treatment plant for Hanoi fabric - knitting Enterprise, Army Hospital No.108, etc.;
- Water supply systems for Sonla sugar factory, Conhue residential area, Backan town, etc.;
- Wastewater treatment plants for National center for natural science and technology, Vuondao (Quangninh), Do son (Hai Phong) areas, Hanoi exporting mechanical tools Co., Vinaxuki mechanical Co. Ltd., Meritus westlake (Sofitel) Hotel, Sun red river Hotel, Hospitals HD, K, C, PS, ..., etc.
